Eleven Cadets from across Texas pulled up to the gates of Lackland Air Force Base and unloaded their luggage into an aircraft hanger to start the summer 2006 Group V Airmen Leadership School. With the cadets looking on at the position of parade rest, their bags were searched and contraband confiscated.

The rest of the night consisted of a dinner of commercially produced chow also known as pizza, followed by the standard pre-test intended to measure the students' knowledge of Civil Air Patrol prior to school. With the test concluded, the students were then released for some much- needed personal time followed by lights out. Students even had the privilege of pulling CQ duty throughout the night.
At dawn the next morning, the students awoke to the sounds of Cadet Chief Master Sgt. Gus Rojas and ushered downstairs for a light session of physical fitness followed by breakfast. Classes then proceeded for most of the day; one of the first being the very insightful and beneficial lecture on customs and courtesies given by Cadet Master Sgt. Robert Adams.

Students also received classes on other various subjects, including basic history of the Civil Air Patrol, function of the cadet programs, and principles of leadership and followership. They also received in- depth instruction on basic drill from Cadet Cheif Master Sgt. Robert Cockrell, a guest instructor from the Medina Valley HS Air Force JROTC, before breaking for lunch.

Following a written course examination over the material learned during the day, the tired students then hit the racks and prepared for another night of CQ duty.

On Sunday, the final day, the students participated in a drill competition to measure the drill instruction they drill instruction they received on Saturday. Afterwards, the students practiced for their graduation and had the opportunity to hear a wonderful talk by Lt. Colonel Eddy Billman, the Group V Commander.

The closing event of the weekend was the graduation ceremony, to which family was invited. All the students receieved their graduation certificates, and the Cadets were presented with special awards. The Warrior Cadet Award was presented to Cadet Airmen Mary Helen Garcia; the Academic Excellence Award was presented to Cadet Airmen Brian Rankin; and, the Honor Cadet Award was presented to Cadet airmen First Class Ciara Carballo.

Following the ceremony, the cadets were dismissed from the the school. Students and parents also had an opportunity to purchase a computer slide show produced by the public affairs staff.

The weekend was an amazing learning experience for both the students and cadet staff, and the lessons they gained during the school will continue to support their future successes in the cadet program.
