KENS 5 TELEVISION STATION

The Lackland Cadet Squadron, CAP Cadets Visited KENS 5 Television Station in San Antonio, Texas.
Cadets from the Lackland Cadet Squadron visited KENS 5 television
station. KENS 5 is the CBS television affiliate in San Antonio, Texas. KENS 5 signed on the
air on 15 Feb 1950. KENS is one of the broadcast homes of the NBA San Antonio Spurs, and also
has been the home of game shows Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy for two decades. Chris Marrou,
San Antonio’s Most Respected Anchor recently retired. He worked at KENS from 1973-2009. He
is an Emmy-Award Winning Anchor. Because of Chirs Marrou KENS has dominated the 5, 6, and
10 PM Newscasts. His replacement Jeff Vaughn will start in Jan 2010. KENS broadcasts a total
of 27.5 hours of local news per week (with 3.5 hours on weekdays, and 2.5 hours on Saturdays,
and 2.0 hours on Sundays. The station also produces a local morning talk show titled Great
Day SA, currently hosted by Bridget Smith, reporter Eileen Teves, morning meteorologist Paul
Mireles and “Traffic Watch” reporter Kellie Patterson.

2d Lt Rick Martinez works in the Engineering Dept at KENS 5. He
has been working at KENS for over 30 years. He is also a Senior Member of the Bexar County
Senior Squadron in San Antonio, Texas. He took the Lackland Cadets on a 1-hour tour of KENS
5. The tour consisted of visiting the master control room, the studio, the production room,
the satellite room, the video room, the assignment area, and the reporting area.
The Cadets who attended were C/2d Lt Alexander Holiday, C/AB Lacy
Brantley, C/SrA Samuel Rogers, C/AB Brandon White, C/AIC Kevin Martinez, C/AB Savon Vigil,
C/SrA Joshua Alvarez. 2d Lt Nancy Kerr, and five family members went on the tour also. ,
